Havanna is the capital of Cuba and also Cuba's biggest city. The city was originally a centre for trade and the main port for the Spanish colonies in America. Old Havanna is a jumble of small alleyways, colonial houses and remnants of what hane been beauitiful palaces and trade buildings. Havana is poor and the class differences are big but the ordinary tourist will rarely see this The city image is also influenced by cars from the 50s that are repaired and attempted to be kept going without any proper means. The hard currency is dollar, either sent from relatives abroad, or accessed through prostitution, black market trade or petty crime. There is a state shop in each area with empty shelves, while further down the street there may be a dollar store with everything possible, where a piece of meat costs a month's salary... Electricity or water are still switched off for one or several hours a couple of times a week, so that there will be enough for the tourist hotels. Then the Cubans move out their chairs and wait. When day turns into night music and laughter are still always heard and there's an air of expectation, night in Havanna again...
