Beach or city? It's hard when you can't choice. Fortunately, there are holiday destinations that offer both and Las Palmas is one of them. This capital of Gran Canaria, received the first package holiday tourists already in the sixties. After a couple of decades, the destination began to feel old and Las Palmas became known as "The old whore". However, as it is with all trends, if you wait long enough it will get hip again. This is exactly what happened to Las Palmas. The contrasts between old and new are exciting. Many of the hotels have been renovated, some have been rebuilt to apartments. Several of the remaining worn down façades feel "retro" in a cool way. History and modern culture, tourism and Spanish every day life is pleasantly mixed. Las Palmas offers plenty of gay life and cruising. The Spanish soul is always present, despite suspiciously non-Spanish items on some of the food menus. Here you find the latest fashions and a pulsating nightlife, as well as traditional tapas bars and a long sandy beach. In the old parts, La Vegueta, it's really cosy to walk around among restaurants and museums!
